Ajax Shop with page number on URL creates 404 if not loaded correctly

Recently I was checking Google Analytics for some incidents where there was a 404 error when a user was trying to access a category page directly. To give more details about this:

1. I have set: Products per page to be 12.
2. Load more button is set as pagination under -> Theme settings->Product archive -> Product Grid
3. Keep the page number in the URL also enabled.

I have tried to remove the 12 from the URL when it is set through the “Products per page link” and I noticed that if this is removed, the page can load all the products on one single page, thus making the page/3 number return a 404 error.

So I would like to ask the following questions:

A. Is this the default behaviour and why does this return an error 404 on analytics?
B. Should the number on the URL be set to OFF if the products per page link is present and loads more or infinite scrolling is enabled?
