You do not need a child theme for changing CSS. All CSS code is added to the Theme Settings > Custom CSS and it would remain even after theme updates.

I would recommend exporting all the content Dashboard > Tools > Export/Import reinstall all from scratch and add the CSS in the correct place. In this case, if you do something wrong you can roll back just commenting or deleting the CSS snippet.
