I aim to create a user experience where clicking on a product attribute (e.g., color, size) within the product listing page transitions the user to a specific image showcasing that attribute’s swatch. Ideally, these swatches would be separate product variations, not entirely new products.

According to your explanation, WoodMart has an option called Linked variations, but when you are going to use it then attribute will show itself as a Single Product in Product grid / listing page without showing as selectable attributes.
