It seems that when a customer logs in the shop, he gets directed to the My Account page. Can this be made so that he goes straight to the home page?

Right. You need to set the shop page and then go to the Dashboard > General > Reading and set the shop page as the home page. One and the same page will both shop page and home page. Do not add any content to the shop page, it is a functional page.
As for login in, right, the user gets to the Account page and it cannot be changed.
