I have the exact same issue, but cannot fix.

I have
– Thumbnail: with image thumbnail, different from the one in heading background

– Image for category heading: empty

If I upload a picture onto “Image for category heading”, I see that new picture as the heading background,
If I then delete it, the previous background image is shown, and it is a demo picture
