Child Theme – How Does It Work

Apologies. I don’t mean to be dense – I just don’t understand it.
Is this correct.
1. I install main theme.
2. I install child theme.
3. I make the child theme activated/live.
4. When it comes to updating I only update the main theme? And then it upgrades the child theme?
5. Is there any degradation in speed/performance on the live site when using the activated child theme?
6. Are all plugins like cache plugins installed on to the child theme or the main theme?

4. You need to update the parent theme only.
5. By default, child theme doesn’t have any code added inside it so it doesn’t influence the performance.
6. Cache plugins don’t depend on the theme at all.
