header -> search -> Show categories dropdown with only level 1 category ?

Hi,

I have like 1000+ sub-categories , if I enable this option , the category dropdown list is wayyyyyy to long

for example I have something like

level 1 cat 
  -->   level 2 cat  1
        ---> level 3 cat  1
        ---> level 3 cat 2
  -->  level 2 cat 2 
      ...
     ...
  -->  level 2 cat 3 

is there any way , I can make it only display the level 1 and/or level 2 category ?
