Subcategory menu really basic

Hello. I’ve set up my product category menu and really like it. The problem is when a category has a child categories , the menu looks absolutely basic and ugly. No lines in the row between different categories. Is there a way to customize this?
Also, I would like to add a count for every category, to display the amount of products in every one.
