I attached the CSS code provided although it’s not working correctly, products are not staying highlighted.

Please try adding the following Custom CSS in the Global Custom CSS area under Theme Settings >> Custom CSS.

.wd-swatch.swatch-on-single.swatch-size-default.active-swatch.swatch-enabled {
background-color: black !important;
color: white !important;
}

I added it to the existing css code you provided, I take it this is what I was meant to do and not replace any of the other code ..
