Error when editing widgets

When opening the widget editor menu, I receive several errors and a warning e-mail from WordPress.
“A critical error has occurred on this site”. What causes this error, and how can I solve it?

The problem disappeared when I added the plugin “Classic Widgets” (https://wordpress.org/plugins/classic-widgets/).
