Getting a 404 error when I modify the permalink

Everytime I try to change the permalink for product category abreviation I get a 404 error when I try to view a product after change the permalink.
I do see that the correct URL was generated but the product is not found. I would like to change the product category abreviation to %category%

You need to delete and recreate the category from scratch and then assign the products once more.

I did get manage it to with a product permalink using custom notation: /product/%product_cat%/ but I understand from your feedback that it’s possible to just have /%product_cat%/ ? Do I need to delete all the existing categories and assign them once more to all products?
This would not be a problem by they way since I am just starting with the site.

If you configure the permalinks you do not need to delete the categories. I thought you are trying to change the product category slug.
When you configure the permalinks correctly no errors occur.

The question remains though if it is possible to create a permalink of just %product_cat% instead of /product/%product_cat%/?
When I try to use just %product_cat% the name /product/ is automatically added to the beginning which I don’t want.
