I tried to add the logo many times, but to no avail. I tried in PNG and SVG formats, and in more than one version.

It didn’t make any difference.
Make sure you are editing the correct header.
Some pages might have a different header assigned and using ( different from the default one marked with yellow star).
If the header you want to edit is showing on home page go: Pages – Edit the Home page – scroll down and there will be header section. Check if there is no custom header assigned
