How does the theme define “the related product” in the product page section.

May I know how does the “related products” work? Is it possible to change the rule to define related product?
The “related products” in the product single page is not quite related to the current product. In many cases, they are not from the same category with current product, they don’t even share with the same product attribute with current product. To me, the related product seems to be randomly picked.
