How to add/edit/remove checkout fields using codes

Hi! Could you please precise how to add or edit checkout fields using codes? For example I need to add under Company name (optional) field two extra fields:
1) Registration number (required for a company)
Note: this field is optional as not all clients are companies, but I must add somewhere the note that it’s required for companies. Maybe instead of text (optional) – is it possible?
2) Company VAT number (required for a company)
Note: same as for the first field
