Where do I put these little icons that can be seen in the category menu?

Please navigate to Products > Categories > Edit Category > Upload the image for Header Menu:

But how come the current categories that are automatically there when the theme is installed have an icon and no images placed in that part?

Hello,

You can simply edit the category and click on the Upload button in the category settings and upload the image of your choice. Let me know if you need further assistance!
