Linked variations with variable products?

Hello,

We have a feature request from a client that we’re building a new Woodmart website for.

Essentially, they have their products as *a lot* of combined SKUs in their backend. So example, one shirt is approximately 78 different SKUs corresponding to 3 different colors, 26 different sizes.

With the normal variable product swatch setup, this makes it almost impossible to find a combination that both exists and is in stock.

So our thinking was – maybe we create the colors as different products, and combine them using Linked variations. This gets us most of the way there, but it doesn’t seem like the Linked Variations widget gets output on our product page.

For an example of what we’re looking to accomplish, take a look at this page – each color is a different product, with the sizes as variants:

To be clear, we want to create the colors as linked variants, and use the sizes as variants for the individual product.

Is there a way to accomplish what we’re looking for otherwise, in that case?

Say if the customer were to click the color swatch, is it possible to query the variable product right away to disable the color/size combinations that don’t exist/aren’t in stock?

The same can be done only with the help of Linked variations, but it will not work in the way you described above, unfortunately.
