Most optimal image format for category carousel on front page

Hello,
When I added the thumbnails for categories, I made them is 250×250 px, with 96 ppp.
Though, the result on a PC is not ideal, too blurred.

1. My impression is that, for this carousel, the 1/1 aspect ratio for images is optimal. Do you confirm?

2. To get them cleaner on a PC, what shall I do? Increase the size in px? If yes, to how much?
Or shall increase the ppp, and then to how much?

1. Yes, 1/1 ratio should look well there.

2. It depends on a number of columns you have. Try to increase them to 350×350 and check the result.

So, made trials.
Fyi, increase ppp and stay at 250×250 gives better results than switch to 350 and stay on 96.
