my attributes are not showing in the filter on category pages

on the main shop page i have colors and various other attribute filters but when i select a category i no longer have those filters

The filters are only showing on the sidebar when the page or category has the variable products and variations are created for the products then the filters will show. This is the default functionality of the widgets.
