Parent category has gone but children categories are still today

Hi
today my parent categories have suddenly gone from my dashboard and web.
the children categories are sill on the web, but I cannot access them from my dashboard. This def happened today as I am getting a lot of “broken links emails”
The menus all have the links still there, but the actual menu has a blank space.

Could an update have done this?
How can I access the parent categories?

I have just noticed – If I go to my dashboard the count still has the correct number of categories, but none of the parent categories are there
No child categories are on dashboard, but they are still there on the web (ie any links I have to them) and the links are working

Could you please check how it works with the default wordpress theme because the categories are woocommerce functionality and our theme doesn’t influence.
