Product images images gone from gallery after shortpixel install

I know there is an issue with <picture> tags, which is why I have not selected the method. Nor have I batch optimized anything yet. So it doesnt make sense that Shortpixel incompatibility would be the issue here. But I have not installed any other plugin in the last week.
All products had images in the product gallery on the product page. For thousands of products all image gallery images are no longer visible nor connected.
If I go to the media library and search for the SKU then the images are still in the media library. Disabling ShortPixel does not fix the issue.
Please help. Please see my notes in the private field, because it has information from Short Pixel development and their contact details.
