Swatches – How do I use an swatch image on the product page instead of a colour.

I need to use an image for the swatch instead of selecting a colour. The specific swatch needs to be 2 colours instead of 1 (circular image with black on the left and red on the right.) The shop page sidebar widget allows me to display the image, but the product page as well as the hover state on the shop page only allow me to use the colour. How do I use an image instead of the colour on the product page?
