Targeting CSS Selectors

Hi There
I am trying to add extra style to the theme using CSS selectors but it does not work. For example I select a selector using
.xyz {property:value }

but this does not work. Do I have to follow specific steps to add extra styles or JavaScript?

Maybe some styles interrupt your CSS properties, I need to see what you do and why, so then I can tell you what was wrong in your code.
