Variation Swatches image

Variation Swatches image for WooCommerce
Regarding variations displayed as graphics, my store has hundreds of products, each with different variations. I want each product to display variations as images. Is the only way to set a “color” attribute for each product, and then in Variable products -> Attribute swatches -> Grid swatch attribute to display, select “color”? Does this mean each variation needs a different attribute name set under “color”?
