Could you tell me what are the recommended/ideal sizes for the background images for the mobile version of the slider so they look centered?

Navigate to Sliders > Sliders > edit the slider > and you can change the height of slider in mobile device:

Navigate to Slides > Edit Slide > In the bottom of the slide check the slide settings for mobile devices and set the background size and background image position.
