Changing permalink structure causes 404 error on all pages except Home.

    If i change the permalink structure from ‘Plain’ to anything else the site breaks with 404 errors on all pages except home. I have tried solving the problem with no success. The website root directory contains no .htaccess file so i created one but it didn’t help.
