Default Settings keep changing

For some reason, my Theme settings keep changing. I dont know if this is because of plugins I may add or delete, or activate and deactivate, or when I updated the theme. Any information on this issue is helpful.
But, I feel this can be avoided if there was some way for me to either lock those settings so nothing changes when I do anything else on the site, OR if there was a way to save and restore my default settings.
If any of these are possible please let me know.

You can create an export file with the theme settings and upload each time you have finished testings to restore them. You can find the option in the Theme Settings > Export/import

Do you have any documentation on how that works?
I see a relatively blank page with 2 buttons – import and export options
I exported options and it downloaded a .json file
Is this the file with all the theme settings?
Then to see if I could import it, i pressed import, but the page immediately refreshed with this message “New options are successfully imported.” So what did it import?
