Disable Page Title by default but turn on for individual pages

I must be doing something incorrect. I want to have the page title disabled by default. HOWEVER, I have a few pages where I want it to show. To do so I have:
1. theme settings: default to “none”
2. individual page setting: hide title: no, size: large
But it doesn’t show the title.
Is the only option that I make the default to Large and hide it on all the pages I don’t want it?
