How to configure “Links to social profiles”

Please can you tell me what to do to configure Theme Settings – Social Profiles – Links to social profiles?
(I cannot find any documentation anywhwere)

For example …

What does the # mean/do in some of the default settings?
What I should/could put into the empty fields?

The # defines a dummy link to make the particular icon visible. You can replace the # with your social profile links.

Am I right in thinking these Theme Settings – Social Profiles – Links to social profiles settings only apply if/when manually inserting the [social_buttons type="follow"] shortcode somewhere on the website?
