How can I change the background color to black so the menu (which is white) appears?

Make sure you have set the Dark text color http://prntscr.com/ma3xh7 Theme Settings > Header > Appearance

If you have the dark color but the text is white on the front end, navigate to the page > edit and set the dark color for the page https://xtemos.com/docs/basel/options-for-pages-2/
