Parent Level Categories

On our top level (parent level) categories, we have them set to show subcategories only, from with the categories setting for those categories. For these top level categories only, we want to hide the filter menu left bar and ONLY show the sub categories. How can we accomplish this?

Im using the custom layout as you suggested and it will work out well. I am trying to add in the brands woodmart widget and am selecting to show brands that are in this category only. Its not working and is showing all brands. The only thing I can think of is, I am selecting a parent category. No products are actually in this parent category, they are all in one level down sub categories. How can I make this work without manually adding all the brands I want and having to maintain that for each parent cat.
