WoodMart vs Flatsome: WooCommerce theme comparison

0

In this article we compare two of the most popular WooCommerce themes: WoodMart and Flatsome. Instead of simply listing features, we tested both themes under identical conditions and compared them across the criteria that matter most: customization options, WooCommerce integration, performance, prebuilt templates, and other aspects that affect building and growing an online store. Our goal is to show the strengths and weaknesses of each theme so you can make an informed choice.

Disclosure

WoodMart is our theme. We build and maintain it at XTemos. That means we naturally know it better than we know Flatsome, and we recognize that this creates a potential bias in a comparison like this.

To minimize that bias, we tested both themes under the same conditions, linked to the original performance reports, and clearly stated the versions used during testing. We also highlighted the areas where Flatsome performs well and where we believe it offers a better approach.

We are not affiliated with UX Themes and did not contact them before publishing this article.

Theme settings

In WoodMart, virtually all global options are collected in the Theme Settings section. Here you can change the basic parameters of the site (page layouts, colors, typography) and configure features related to marketing, conversion rate and store optimization.

The built-in settings search deserves a separate mention. Almost every option comes with a tooltip that includes an explanation, an image or a short video.

Theme Settings also lets you create several sets of settings and apply them to different pages or layouts using conditions. On top of that, settings backup is available.

In Flatsome, theme settings are split between two interfaces: Theme Options and Advanced Options.

  • Theme Options is built on the WordPress Customizer and contains the site appearance settings.
  • Advanced Options contains the theme functionality settings.

One of the main advantages of Theme Options is visual editing through the WordPress Customizer. Many changes can be previewed in real time, without saving the settings or reloading the page. This makes the configuration process more visual and convenient.

Backup and import are available only for Advanced Options and do not cover Theme Options.

Conclusion. WoodMart bets on a centralized settings system with search, presets and backup, which is especially convenient for large, long-running projects. Flatsome takes a different approach: thanks to the WordPress Customizer, the configuration process is more visual, and many changes can be evaluated in real time. Both solutions are convenient, but they are oriented toward different ways of working with the theme.

Page builder

WoodMart supports three popular page editors: Gutenberg, Elementor and WPBakery. By default the theme uses Gutenberg, extending it with its own block library. Besides the standard blocks, WoodMart offers specialized WooCommerce blocks and layouts for different parts of the site.

For example, to create a custom Single Product Layout there are separate blocks that can be combined to build your own product page structure. The same approach is used for other templates as well, including Products Archive, Cart, Checkout, My Account, Single Post and Posts Archive.

Flatsome uses its own UX Builder, a visual editor integrated directly into the theme. It contains 34 core elements for building pages and content.

Customizing the Products Archive, Cart, Checkout, My Account, Single Post and Posts Archive layouts is done through Theme Options rather than directly in UX Builder.

Conclusion. WoodMart offers more options for visually customizing WooCommerce layouts directly in the editor. Flatsome bets on a simple UX Builder, with individual store layout settings moved into Theme Options.

Prebuilt websites

WoodMart offers one of the largest libraries of ready-made demos among WooCommerce themes. At the time of testing, 102 Prebuilt Websites were available, and the library is regularly expanded with new demos alongside theme updates. You can selectively remove demo content, and import individual pages without installing the entire demo site.

For importing individual sections there is the Template Library, which contains over 402 ready-made templates. Individual sections and blocks can be imported independently of the full demo site. Most templates in the Template Library are individual parts of pages from the Prebuilt Websites.

Flatsome offers 17 Prebuilt websites, which can be installed while going through the Setup Wizard. In addition, the theme has Flatsome Studio, a library of ready-made templates containing both individual sections and complete pages. Templates in Flatsome Studio are not connected to the Prebuilt websites and constitute a separate content library.

Conclusion. WoodMart is more oriented toward working with ready-made demo sites, allowing you to import individual pages and sections from existing Prebuilt websites. Flatsome takes a different approach: Flatsome Studio is an independent template library that can be combined with Prebuilt websites to create your own pages.

Performance

To make the comparison as objective as possible, both themes were tested under identical conditions. For each one, an identical demo site was created with the same content, images, page structure and performance settings. The server used was from SiteGround, on the StartUp Hosting plan. Testing was carried out without caching plugins. For each theme, only the required or recommended plugins necessary for its correct operation were used.

To evaluate performance we used Google PageSpeed Insights and Catchpoint. The results of the mobile and desktop testing are given below.

Real page load speed in Chrome DevTools

Besides synthetic tests, we also checked real page load speed in Chrome DevTools using the Slow 4G profile with cache disabled. This scenario better demonstrates how the site behaves during a user’s first visit.

Conclusion. In our tests, WoodMart consistently demonstrated better results in both Google PageSpeed Insights and Catchpoint. The largest difference was observed in Largest Contentful Paint, which directly affects how fast the page load feels to the user. At the same time, it is worth keeping in mind that performance results can change depending on server configuration, installed plugins, caching and the amount of content, so the data given here reflects the results of this specific test environment.

WooCommerce features

This is not a complete list of capabilities. We selected only those WooCommerce features that most often influence theme choice and that can replace separate third-party plugins.

Conclusion. Both themes support the basic WooCommerce features. The main difference shows up in advanced eCommerce capabilities. Who should choose WoodMart?

WoodMart will be the better choice if you:

  • want to get the maximum number of WooCommerce features without installing a large number of third-party plugins;
  • plan to build or scale an online store with extensive customization options;
  • use Gutenberg, Elementor or WPBakery and want to keep your freedom to choose a page builder;
  • value a large number of ready-made templates, blocks and built-in marketing tools.

Who should choose Flatsome?

Flatsome will be a good choice if you:

  • prefer working with UX Builder;
  • do not need a large number of additional WooCommerce features;
  • are ready to extend your store’s capabilities with third-party plugins when needed;
  • are looking for a theme with basic functionality;
  • value having a large community on Facebook.

Final conclusion

WoodMart and Flatsome are among the best themes for building online stores on WooCommerce, but they take different approaches.

WoodMart offers more built-in WooCommerce features, broader customization options, a larger library of ready-made templates and better performance results. Because of this, in many cases you can do without third-party plugins.

Flatsome uses its own UX Builder and offers a different approach to building an online store. The main emphasis is on working within its own ecosystem, while implementing some of the advanced WooCommerce scenarios may require third-party plugins.

If maximum functionality, flexibility and the ability to scale your store in the future matter to you, WoodMart will be the better choice. But if you already work with UX Builder or are looking for a theme with a basic set of core WooCommerce capabilities, Flatsome also remains a strong solution.
